Lucienne’s Farwell Outfit

The last time we see Lucienne her outfit consists of the skirt from her Visit Ensemble, the blouse from her Flying Ensemble/Meet Rawling outfit, and a new green sweater. Pictures for this scene weren’t the best, but you can see her blouse pretty well.

Her sweater is dark green and comes down below her hips. It’s not fitted, and there doesn't appear to be a tie or anything to help pull it in.

We do get a good shot of the fabric during their hug good-bye. Is her sweater faded on her shoulders or is it just the sun??? Either way, the green material is embroidered with something like vines or flowers, but I can’t be completely certain what.

And just as a note, I love the ties in her hair, though my hair is too thick for that to work for me. Maybe she has an elastic band underneath. :oP

So we come to the end of my costume study for Flyboys! I hope everyone enjoyed it and that it will be a good resource for anyone wanting to recreate any of Lucienne’s costumes or in need of WW1 inspiration!

Feel free to give advice or suggestions for future costume studies by comment. And if you would, please vote in the sidebar’s poll! (And feel free to be brutally honest.)

Lucienne’s Rescue Ensemble

When Rawlings rescues Lucienne from the Germans she is in her red skirt and purple sweater from the Flying Outfit. She is wearing a new white blouse with a deep V filled in with striped material. When he returns with his plane she has put on trench coat.

During most of this sequence, the movie is either dark or only head shots, so it was difficult to get good pictures. However in this one you can see her boots well and a little of her coat sleeve.

And we actually get a glimpse of one of the blouse’s sleeves! Not the greatest of shots from a costumer’s perspective, but this is the only time in the whole movie that you see her without a sweater over her blouses. As you can hopefully tell from the picture, this blouse has short sleeves. It looks like it might have a tuck or two along the sleeve hem, as well.

We also get a look at the dark stockings Lucienne is wearing under her boots. This is also one of the few times the lighting is good enough to see some of the details on her trench coat.

Lucienne’s blouse is very pretty and rather “titanic” looking in my opinion, which isn’t really a surprise as their very close timewise… Also note that you can see the lace from her undergarments peeking out of the left side in this shot. Perhaps a corset cover?

Difficult to see, but the closest to a full-shot I could get.

We only have one more post until the end! Next Monday is the last of this Flyboys costume study – Lucienne’s Farewell Outfit.

Lucienne’s Flying Ensemble

When Rawlings comes to take Lucienne flying she is wearing a red skirt, white blouse (from Meet Rawlings Outfit), and purple sweater. In the beginning of the scene, she’s holding her hat from the Counting Plane’s Outift.

You can see the hem of her petticoats underneath, and that she’s wearing black boots.

The skirt is a wrap-around with buttons all the way down. (What an amazing idea! Wrap-arounds can get awkward depending on the depth of the wrap, but buttons would completely solve the problem! They might inhibit walking a bit, though…) Lucienne’s buttons are in groups of three, and there are three groups of them. The skirt has a belt with a front clasp. In these pictures, you can also tell that the collar on Lucienne’s sweater is a different material from the ribbed sweater fabric.

Here you can see the buttons on the sweater, starting low because of the long collar. I believe there are at least three buttons, and the buttons may be fabric covered but you can never see them very well. There are two pockets on the sides of the sweater, with a fabric top like the collar, but I wasn’t able to get any good stills of them.

Here’s the best shot for the length of Lucienne’s skirt and sweater. You also get another peek at her petticoat’s hem.

The back of the sweater’s collar is a simple curve.

Above you can see more blouse details, and the ribbed fabric of her sweater…

Next Monday is Lucienne’s Rescue Ensemble.

Lucienne’s Visit Ensemble

When Rawlings visits Lucienne’s home for the first time she is wearing her white blouse and yellow sweater from the Plane Counting Outfit, but this time she has paired it with a red a-line skirt with scallop detail above the hem. The scallop almost appears to be the hem of an overskirt, but I can't be exactly sure. Her skirt is ankle length, so you can see her little black heels and dark stockings.

Here you can see the sleeve edge details. There’s also something going vertically up the sleeve, maybe around the seam...

I love the details around the hem of her sweater, especially the drawstring with the balls on the ends! You can also see the discolored stains that I mentioned earlier pretty well. And does the skirt look orange-ish from this angle?

The skirt back is pleated, maybe with knife pleats. You can see the back of the blouse's sailor collar here and the decorative row of eyelets down the back of her sweater.

The last couple pictures are of the details in the front of the sweater. You can see the sleeves pretty well in these, too.

Lucienne’s Gardening Apron

I realized last week that I almost skipped one of Lucienne’s costumes! But don’t worry, because it just happened to turn out that it fit in right here where we are in the movie! Funny how things work, isn’t it? :o)

When the planes return, Lucienne is working in her garden but stops to count how many of the planes have survived the battle. She is wearing her Plane Counting Outfit with a full coverage apron over it.

It’s not very shapely, but is very practical, made to protect her entire outfit from dirt. Lucienne’s clothes are pretty but practical. It seems the costume designer wanted to portray a realistic wardrobe, with staple pieces used multiple times. Various pieces of Lucienne’s outfits reappear in later scenes, and quite often they look slightly worn or stained as if she’s had them for a long time. The details are really fascinating, giving the feel of a country girl’s wardrobe during wartime.

I like the collar flap of the front neckline which gives the apron some detail. It looks like there might be a button holding the collar down.

Next week is Lucienne’s Visiting Ensemble!

Cross Stitch Update

Remember the Paula Vaughn cross stitch I posted about awhile back? Well, here’s a quick update on my progress so far!

I've been working more consistently on this now that I have a self-imposed deadline: New Years. I know it's the middle of summer and New Years seems far away, but this is a pretty large and intensive project! I'll give ya'll a couple updates as noticeable changes are made. Time to put in a movie and get some work done! :o)

P.S. Hope you all had a great 4th of July! Unfortunately I was sick, which is why I didn't put up a costume study... I'm feeling much better now, but as it is already Thursday, I think there just won't be a costume study this week. We'll pick it back up next Monday with Lucienne's Gardening Apron.

Lucienne’s Plane Counting Outfit

For this short scene, Lucienne’s outfit is composed of a white blouse and yellow sweater, a tan skirt and a red hat.

I love Lucienne’s hat in this part! I really like hats, and adore the red with the huge flower! *sigh of delight* There’s a Butterick hat pattern (the 1920's one) with a similar brim shape, although its lines (especially the crown) are rather simplistic.

You get a really good look in this scene at the shape of her blouse’s wide, sailor-like collar, trimmed with small crocheted edging. Also visible are the discoloration stains on her left sleeve and the hem of her sweater, giving it a well-worn and well-loved look. You can kind of see the pattern of the ribbed openwork going up-and-down her sweater, as well. She wears this sweater and blouse in the next outfit as well, so I’ll say more about them then…

Lastly, she’s wearing a tan skirt. It looks to me as though it’s pleated with gathers (or smaller pleats) in the center back. This is the only real shot you get of it, though, and this is the only time she wears this skirt, so your guess is as good as mine.

Look for Lucienne’s Visit Ensemble Monday!

Lucienne’s Meet Rawlings Outfit

Okay, so I’m not real original with my titles… Hey, come on, be nice! I’m trying here! And it’s a pretty outfit, so just don’t think about the so-not-unique name I gave it. :oP

When we first meet Lucienne, she’s wearing a white blouse with a ruffled neck, a brown (leaning toward red) skirt, and a yellow wrap sweater. (All of Lucienne’s outfits consist of a skirt, blouse, and sweater.)

Her skirt appears to have box pleats in the back and a smooth front. Her sweater ties on the left, but it appears that the ties go all the way around, giving the baggy sweater a defined waist.

The sweater has trim around the entire edge as you can see in the picture above and the next picture. (You can see the hem details in the first couple pictures.)

I really like this sweater and would like to try and make one. If anyone has any ideas, please pass them along. (I’m afraid I’m a great dreamer, and may never get around to actually doing it… But it’s still fun to make plans, right?)

And in this last picture you can tell that it’s light weight and see through. You can also kind of see the blouse sleeves through it, though the first picture was probably better for that... I can’t tell if the blouse sleeves are elbow length or rolled up. They appear to be a bit bulky in the elbow area. Hmmm…

Costume Study - FLYBOYS

I’m happy to welcome you to the introduction of my very first costume study!!! Over the next several Mondays, I will be posting a costume study on Lucienne’s wardrobe from the movie Flyboys starring James Franco. If you’re unfamiliar, Flyboys is an awesome WW1 movie about (what else?!) American flyboys during the war! You can find a review on pluggedin.com if you are interested.

Although the costume study will be focused on Lucienne only, I thought for the introduction I'd show off the guys in their uniforms...

And look at Rawling’s boots! Aren’t they awesome? I love the way the strap wraps around!

I’ll warn you now that some of my pictures might not always be great. Remember: I’m looking at the costumes, not faces. I’ll try to get as good a shot of the actors as I can, but sometimes you can’t see the outfits as well when the people look good. Sorry!

Lastly, I’ve never made any of these costumes nor done extensive research on the period, so you’re just getting my observations. If you have any thoughts or suggestions about anything – the costumes, my format, or anything really – please comment!

Hope you enjoy!
